PROFILE OF THE ETHIOPIAN WORLD FEDERATION, INCORPORATED

The Ethiopian World Federation, Incorporated (The “EWF” or the “Federation”), is a not-for-profit membership organization, incorporated in New York City in 1937, which holds Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations.  It is a tax exempt 501(C)4 Civic League, Social welfare organization having non-profit 501(C)3 status as well. The organizational structure provides for child entities (Locals) functioning to carry out the organization’s Aims and Objects on a grassroots level in their resident domains. The Locals provide the membership base and function through several committees and units each having their own responsibilities – youth, health, education, housing, women’s issues, music, ways and means etc. Any 25 qualifying members can submit a request to form a Local in their community.

HISTORY
In The Real Facts about Ethiopia, J. A. Rogers, writing of His Imperial Majesty, states: “Lastly, in one of his declarations Haile Selassie announced that he is the head, not only of Ethiopia, but of all people of African descent everywhere.”

During the Italian invasion of Ethiopia (1935-1941) a group of prominent Harlemites who were leaders of United Aid For Africa sought an audience with the Emperor of Ethiopia, His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, who was in exile in Bath, England at the time to discuss “financial matters”. In response to their request for His assistance and oversight in providing a coordinated and organized effort to support Ethiopia in her time of need, His Majesty empowered His emissary, cousin and personal physician, Dr. Malaku Emanuel Bayen, to establish the Ethiopian World Federation, Incorporated with a Constitution and Bylaws with a lofty set of aims and objects summarized in this preamble:

“We the Black People of the World, in order to effect Unity, Solidarity, Liberty, Freedom and self-determination, to secure Justice and maintain the Integrity of Ethiopia, which is our divine heritage, do hereby establish and ordain this constitution for The Ethiopian World Federation, Incorporated”.

In 1945 the Emperor granted land in Shashemene, Ethiopia into the care of the EWF, Inc. for sons and daughters of African Slaves in the Diaspora who desired to return to the Motherland – with a promise to provide more land as needed.  He therefore created a Perpetual Land Grant. In 1970, the Emperor personally appointed Ras Marcus Selassie (Solomon Wolfe), then a Director of the EWF, Inc. Charter #43 in Kingston, Jamaica as Administrator of the Land Grant. He still maintains his post, living on the Land Grant, and along with the EWF, Inc. Resident Country Representative, can be reached at: 011-251-4611-03925.

PROJECTS

In addition to providing for the protection and welfare of the Black Family worldwide, the organization also has a responsibility to develop the Land Grant to facilitate a coordinated repatriation effort for those in the Diaspora who have a desire to return to Africa to claim their divine heritage. Registered as an NGO with the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, there are three (3) main projects registered with the government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia designed to raise the standard of living of repatriating Ethiopians and the local indigenous population as well:

(a)   a Rain Water Harvesting Project (providing concrete water tanks to the local population). With more funding we can expand the project to include water wells, water delivery to tanks in times of drought and expanding the project to provide tanks in other regions of Ethiopia and Africa.

(b)  a comprehensive Vocational Training Institute (which includes an orphanage and a natural herbal health teaching agricultural and research facility) and

(c)   a Self-Sustainable Model City to be a model for African development.  As a project, this is comparable to the development of Israel by the world powers to atone for the Jewish Holocaust.  We believe that the African Slave Trade Holocaust qualifies for such development by world governments and agencies.

The EWF, Inc. is required to support its offices in New York and Ethiopia (one in Addis Ababa and one in Shashemene) which function as a liaison between the Headquarters and the Ethiopian Authorities and the residents on the Land Grant. Locals are also required to develop charitable projects in their communities as well.

Membership joining fee still remains at US$1.00 and membership dues are only 10c per week ($5.20 per year) – as it was in 1937. Donations are also welcome.

RASTAFARI, REGGAE MUSIC & CULTURE

His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie I was a devout Christian, and member of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church for which he gained autonomy from the Egyptian Coptic Church with its own Archdiocese.  Many members of the EWF, Inc. choose to be baptized in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. However religious affiliation does not affect qualification for membership.  However, the Constitution and By-Laws clearly state that members promote the brotherhood of man and the Fatherhood of God. The EWF, Inc. is considered statutorily by New York State, a religious organization.

Although the EWF, Inc. is an organization for all Black peoples worldwide, as a group, the Rastafarian community in particular has embraced the organization because of its ties to His Imperial Majesty, its ties to Africa, the Motherland, its charge of the Land Grant in Ethiopia and its Constitution.  Members of the Rastafarian religion and culture have historically accepted the organization as the administrative, statical arm of the promised legacy and heritage of the King of Kings, who true Rastafarians accept as God Himself.  His Imperial Majesty’s birth line reaching back to Bible times as a traceable descendant of the Tribe of Judah and the the Solomonic Dynasty, gives believers credence to His connection to Bible prophecy.  Numerous references to Africa and Ethiopia in the Bible provide further endorsement of Africa’s role in the shaping of world history and spirituality.

A prophecy that Black people should look to the East for the crowning of a Black King by Jamaican visionary, The Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey (who created a worldwide Back-to-Africa movement in the early 1900’s – the UNIA); and the subsequent coronation in 1930 of Ras Tafari as Emperor was a confirmation to the poor and downtrodden that He was the true Messiah who had come to redeem His people and to take them out of bondage in Babylon.  Such revelations gave rise to the beginnings of the Rastafarian movement.

His Imperial Majesty’s granting land (the Promised Land) in Ethiopia for Repatriation of the sons and daughters of African slaves; a Back-to-Africa fact-finding Mission underwritten by the Government of Jamaica – where the seeds of the religion were first sown – and His visit to Jamaica in 1966 were additional confirmation for Rastafari brethren and sistren of the benevolence of the Most High.  Many recall that day as a day of miracles.  It was reported that His Majesty refused to leave the plane until Rastafari representative Mortimer Planno went forward to welcome Him to Jamaica personally.

The Constitution and By-Laws of the EWF, Inc. declares Red, Gold and Green as the official colors of the Ethiopian World Federation, Inc. The growth of Reggae music and Rastafari culture around the red, gold and green banner is a nod to the connection of the culture and religion to the EWF, Inc., to His Imperial Majesty and to Ethiopia/Africa.  The culture and music developed out of the struggles of the children of African slaves in the Caribbean, and the banner is the expression of hope for a peoples united in reclaiming their ties to the Motherland and claiming their sovereign rights to their African traditions and Divine Heritage.

The music of such icons as Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Garnet Silk, Buju Banton, Gregory Isaacs, Luciano, Sizzla Kalonji and thousands more worldwide singing of the love, promise and redemption of Jah, Rastafari, His Imperial Majesty, has publicized  the culture of Rastafari to the world.  The culture of Rastafari is also manifested in a natural, healthy vegetarian/herbal lifestyle “livity”  and the growing of dreadlocked hair (an ancient African indigenous, tribal and religious tradition – the Nazarite vow).  The Ethiopian World Federation, Inc. has the mandate to protect and promote Ethiopia/Africa, ancient Ethiopian culture, traditions and religions, the standards of the Black and Rastafari community.  The organization must also step up the fight against draconian laws that criminalize marijuana which is used as a medicinal herb known to have over 200 medical properties including glaucoma, pain relief and the side effects of chemotherapy and a religious sacrament by members of the Rastafari faith– while at the same time it is being promoted by the same governments as a medical wonder.

On the other side of the statical order is the “churchical” religious mansions of Rastafari. At a meeting with Priests and High Priests of the Caribbean in Jamaica in June of 2011 at the Scotts Pass Temple of the Nyahbinghi Theocracy Reign Order, International President Sister Gem Morrison was assured by those attending that the mansion was prepared to function under the umbrella of the EWF, Inc. It was also recently revealed (in 2012) that His Highness Crown Prince Zera Yacob, the grandson of Emperor Haile Selassie and Empress Menen, had written to the Twelve Tribes of Israel two years earlier advising them to seek out the Ethiopian World Federation, Inc.

Many of the younger generations are not aware that one of the most well-known organizations that came out of the Ethiopian World Federation, Inc. was indeed the Twelve Tribes of Israel (formerly EWF Local 15 out of Chicago).  While in Jamaica on the 2011 trod, the International President was also well received by officers of the Twelve Tribes mansion, the Priests of the Judah Coptic Church and the Ethiopian African Black International Congress (the Bobo Shanti).  All mansions were very positive and receptive to the Ethiopian World Federation, Inc., and the International President began to make plans to call a combined conference with all mansions before leaving Jamaica but time did not permit.

LEGAL

Unfortunately, because of a period of inactivity in the New York Headquarters in the late 70’s to the 80’s, on its revival in the 90’s, several individuals tried to lay claim to the leadership of the organization.  This resulted in a few lawsuits in the Supreme Court of New York (Brooklyn).  On July 15, 2010 the Court closed the last of the cases, denying for the third time the group that had held “Convention” in Ethiopia in 2008 and 2009 and in Jamaica in 2010 and 2011, headed by Barrymore Tittle (Mora), Emma Young (Empress Ima) and Lloyd Robinson (Obadiah) from London, any rights and privileges to leadership of the organization when they challenged the present Board.

However, they and others still continue to defy the Court’s decision.  Their activities can be seen on the numerous websites on the Internet in the name of the organization.  Therefore prospective members, Locals and donors must ensure that you are in communication with the proper.  The current President is now the official Agent of Service registered with the Department of State.   Her status in the United Nations ECOSOC as the EWF, Inc.’s main representative, and this Executive Council’s registered NGO status with the government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia helps to confirm our status.  Also, the relationship with the long-standing representatives on the Land Grant in Ethiopia is further endorsement of the validity of this current Board.

Unfortunately, the plethora of fraudulent individuals and groups misrepresenting themselves as the Executive Council, has caused discord and a breakdown within the membership.  Based on the Constitution and By-Laws, it is the responsibility of the organization to seek the best legal means to correct such abuses.
